The West Virginia Poetry Society is an affiliate of the National Federation of State Poetry Societies.
Organized in Charleston, WV, in 1950, the West Virginia Poetry Society is an open association of poets dedicated to the promotion and preservation of the art of poetry in the state and the nation. Enrolled members live in thirty-four states and three foreign countries. Currently, local chapters are organized in Charleston (Charleston, Paths and Slam Chapters), Ripley and Morgantown with a new chapter forming in Montgomery.
The organization publishes the work of members in good standing in Laurels, a quarterly journal and news of the society in Crossroads, a quartely newsletter also included with membership.
Every year, the society sponsors annual contests open to everyone, but free to members. There are usually between twenty and thirty categories with over $1000 in prize money awarded. At the end of the year, the winners are invited to read their poems at the annual meeting and will have their poems published in our annual anthology.
New members are always welcome in WVPS or any local chapter. Dues are $20 per year with membership beginning on the date the dues are received by the membership secretary. The organization's sends renewal notices as a courtesy ahead of the end of the year.
Membership includes a subscription to Laurels, the organization's quarterly journal, the right to submit poems for consideration for publication, membership in the organizations private Yahoo group, a subscription to Poet's Crossroads, the WVPS quarterly newsletter; a subscription to Strophes, the NFSPS quarterly newsletter; and free entry into the WVPS annual contest.
